BANGKOK - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday said he had sent Democrat MP Panich Vikritseth to inspect the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia last week, before the lawmaker and six other Thais were arrested by the Cambodian authorities.

He explained during his weekly Cabinet meeting that, although he knew Mr Panich would go to a border area, he did not know where exactly, said a government spokesman.

The seven Thais have been charged with trespassing into Cambodian territory and intruding into a military zone on Dec 29.

Thailand said it will now wait for a Cambodian court to give its verdict before holding talks with its neighbour to bring the group home.

Some 150 Thai activists rallied yesterday against Cambodia in Aranyaprathet, near the Thai-Cambodia border. Waving the national flag and banners, they demanded the group's release.

Thailand had initially planned a defence that the seven had strayed unintentionally into Cambodia but a video has surfaced that adds controversy to the case by showing Mr Panich telling someone on the phone to tell an aide of the Prime Minister that he was on Cambodian territory
